American Academy in Brno is a school that educates leaders for the 21st century. With our unique blend of American-style curriculum and project-based learning, we teach students a wide variety of subjects, and more importantly, how to think creatively and use what they know. Our students learn skills they will use in their future workplaces: collaboration, making presentations, analyzing data, working with people from all over the world, problem solving and thinking outside the box.

Our major aim is to create a safe environment for all our students in which they will be able to fully develop their individual talents and potentials. We believe that each student is unique, learns differently and deserves an individual approach from their teachers and educators.

All the faculty, staff and student body work hard to create a family atmosphere at school, where we respect each other as friends, partners and collaborators. We do not know what the future holds for our students.

Therefore American Academy in Brno focuses on educating creative, articulate and open minded students who can adapt to a variety of environments and truly be citizens of the world.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

At our Elementary School we approach each student as an individual first and through project-based and thematic teaching we enable children to both learn and apply that learning across a wide range of real-world topics and situations. 

1st to 5th year students take courses in the fields of English, mathematics, natural and social sciences, world languages, culture, physical education, art and library skills. From such an early age, they experience the curriculum entirely in English, which gives them a huge advantage in the future and prepares them for a smooth transition to our Middle School.

 

 
MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Middle School program corresponds to grades 6-8 in the Czech educational system. It offers students a diverse range of subjects on which they can exercise a certain amount of choice so that they can focus more on the areas that really interest them.
The subjects are divided into several departments, including but not limited to Mathematics, World Languages and Natural Sciences. From each department, students choose the subjects they want to pursue -- the condition being, of course, that students achieve the required number of credits.
HIGH SCHOOL

High School students work to develop their strengths and focus on subjects that prepare them to study their dream disciplines at quality universities around the world.
High School has four grades and corresponds to the Czech 9th grade of elementary to 3rd grade of high school, so American Academy students leave school a year earlier than  is common in the Czech Republic. Thanks to the composition and quality of the subjects offered, however, they depart high school better prepared for university than anyone else. We pay maximum attention to counseling and preparation for university studies at this level.

 
American Academy in Brno Summer School 2024

Experience a week full of English conversation! Interesting knowledge, educational experiences, and new friends await you when you enroll in the American Academy in Brno Summer School.

Our specially designed program offers a unique combination of educational and recreational activities. During the mornings students will practice communicating in English, participating in discussions, exploring new cultures, playing games, and giving presentations. Afternoons are dedicated to sports and various off-campus excursions.

In addition to the general English program, you can also choose to attend an Information Technology (IT) program that focuses on the Python programming language, a key tool used by tech giants such as Google, Reddit, and YouTube. We'll guide you through the basics, offer space to experiment with Python’s features, and give you the opportunity to apply the knowledge you’ve gained on projects.

We believe it is crucial that our students have easy access to a wide variety of knowledge, including subjects not typically taught at schools. Outside of our core curriculum requirements, students are encouraged to identify and focus on what they find most interesting.

Graduation requirements for students entering AAB in the 2022–2023 academic year:

  • 12 credits of English Communications including English 9: Foundations of Literature and Compositions (required course)
  • 9 credits of Mathematics including Algebra I (required course)
  • 9 credits of Science including Integrated Science (required course)
  • 9 credits of Social Science including U.S. History (required course)
  • 6 credits of a single World Language (level I and II of the same language required)
  • 1 credit of Art
  • 1 credit of Physical Education
  • 1 credit of Health

Total number of credits required for graduation is 67 credits minimum, 72 recommended.

THEME WEEKS

In addition to our American based curriculum, American Academy offers theme weeks in inspired by Finnish educational system. During theme weeks, there is a school-wide project that develops skills and competencies such as communication, team work, collaboration, problem solving, creativity, critical thinking or project management.

NETWORKING-UP

This was the most challenging theme week students were faced with. They were tasked with organizing their own business conference which included everything from finding venues to developing a program of speakers. Students managed the whole budget, established relationships with partners in the business community and even had to deal with the feeling of rejection. They gained valuable skills which can be applied in their future careers. The result was an amazing conference held at Brněnské výstaviště which attracted a wide range of audience members including students and businessmen. Our students were filled with pride at what they were able to accomplish.

PROBLEMS OF TODAY AND SOLUTIONS FOR TOMORROW

“We were given a task, but really it was a whole space to fill”. This is how one of our students described their adventure in the second theme week. Students used their creativity to design a performance centered around problems and issues that face their age group in society. They wrote or chose their own text about different topics including the effects of social media, mental health issues, famine, sustainability and others. They pieced the whole performance together, including rehearsing diligently to make it great. The results were beyond the expectations of any teacher at American Academy. No parents’ eyes were dry after listening to the performances. We even got to hear two songs!

PROBLEMS OF TODAY AND SOLUTIONS FOR TOMORROW
SCARE-O-RAMA

Our students’ very first experience with the American Academy theme week was a Halloween celebration which they decided to call “Scare-O-Rama”. During this week long event, the students were divided into various organizational groups, each entrusted with a specific task to ensure the success of the final event. With minimal assistance from the teaching staff, the students were entrusted with marketing, food and drink, and halloween-themed activities like zombie face painting, scary storytelling, and decorations. The most successful aspect of the entire event was the complete transformation of a classroom into an amazingly frightening maze enjoyed by all of those who dared to enter. Scar-o-rama truly showed how the American Academy experience goes beyond classroom learning.

LEARNING IN THE TIME OF COVID

Theme Week 3 was done in a hybrid way. Some students decided to get together while others preferred to stay home and work from there. There were several different working groups, each focusing on a specific topic related to Covid-19. Some students were to describe their quarantine experience, daily routine, and/or things that worked/did not work for them in the form of a manual for surviving a quarantine while still learning new things. Another group was tasked with creating a time capsule to be kept at school for another 10 years to tell future students about our current experience with the coronavirus . And one group was asked to create a piece of art related to Covid-19.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Don't expect extensive testing to follow application at American Academy in Brno. We are primarily interested in the character and enthusiasm of Middle and High School applicants – that's why the personal interview and essay play such crucial roles in our process.

For Elementary School applicants, we will assess their school readiness at individual enrollment, focusing on gross and fine motor skills, expressive skills, mathematical imagination and social maturity.

For the academic year 2024/25, we have spots for 100 students.
